Laphroaig 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky (pronounced La-froyg) is a single malt Scotch whisky that has always kept itself a bit remote, just like the islanders of Islay themselves. A touch aloof at first, but make the effort, broach acquaintance, and you'll have a warm and genuine friend for life. Take it neat like a stalwart, or with a splash of soft water. Roll it around on your tongue. Release the pungent, earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet nuttiness of the barley, the delicate, heathery perfume of Islay's streams. Close your eyes, and imagine the waves lapping Laphroaig, "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay".

Located on the far edge of the Scotch whisky map, Islay is believed to have been introduced to the art of distillation by Irish monks. The island's remoteness allowed the art to flourish among its inhabitants, despite the tax man's attempts to clamp down on illegal operations. As the law relaxed, several whisky makers established legitimate distilleries, including Donald and Alexander Johnston, a pair of farmers who founded their distillery on the south coast of the island in 1815. The distillery, named after its location, "broad hollow by the bay," came to be known as Laphroaig. It remained in the family's hands for 139 years.
